چکیده

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of physical embodiment in human–agent interaction. Experiment 1 (N 1⁄4 32) shows positive effects of physical embodiment on the feeling of an agent’s social presence, the evaluation of the agent, the assessment of public evaluation of the agent, and the evaluation of the interaction with the agent. A path analysis reveals that the feeling of the agent’s social presence mediates the participants’ evaluation of the social agent. Experiment 2 (N 1⁄4 32) shows that physical embodiment with restricted tactile interaction causes null or even negative effects in human–agent interaction. In addition, Experiment 2 indicates that lonely people feel higher social presence of social agents, and provide more positive social responses to social agents than non-lonely people. The importance of physical embodiment and tactile communication in human–agent interaction and the diverse role of social robots, especially for the lonely population, are discussed. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Effects of Physical Embodiment on Social Presence of Social Robots

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the relative effectiveness of physical embodiment on social presence of social robots. The results of Experiment 1 show positive effects of physical embodiment of social robots (PESR) in the feeling of social presence, the general evaluation of social robots, the assessment of public opinion of social robots, and the evaluation of interaction with s...

Where Robots and Virtual Agents Meet A Survey of Social Interaction Research across Milgram’s Reality-Virtuality Continuum

Traditionally, social interaction research has concentrated on either fully virtually embodied agents (e.g. embodied conversational agents) or fully physically embodied agents (e.g. robots). For some time, however, both areas have started augmenting their agents’ capabilities for social interaction using ubiquitous and intelligent environments. We are placing different agent systems for social ...

Embodiment and Interaction in Socially Intelligent Life-Like Agents

This chapter addresses embodied social interaction in lifelike agents. Embodiment is discussed from both artificial intelligence and psychology viewpoints. Different degrees of embodiment in biological, virtual and robotic agents are discussed, given the example of a bottomup, behavior-oriented, dynamic control of virtual robots. A ‘dancing with strangers’ experiment shows how the same principl...

Physical vs. Virtual Agent Embodiment and Effects on Social Interaction

Previous work indicates that physical robots elicit more favorable social responses than virtual agents. These effects have been attributed to the physical embodiment. However, a recent meta-analysis by Li [1] suggests that the benefits of robots are due to physical presence rather than physical embodiment. To further explore the importance of presence we conducted a pilot study investigating t...

Comparing Physical and Virtual Embodiment in a Socially Assistive Robot Exercise Coach for the Elderly

We present a socially assistive robot (SAR) system designed to engage elderly users in simple physical exercises. The role of physical embodiment in our exercise system is explored with a large multi-session user study comparing the effectiveness of a physically embodied robot coach to that of a virtually embodied robot coach (a computer simulation of the same robot). The study also illustrates...
